Year of participation: 2011
Age: 34
Job description: Community Development Officer
Local government: Eldoret Municipal Council
Country: Kenya
Talent programme: Climate Change & Sustainable Local Development
Internship municipality: Municipality of Delft

My work for Eldoret Municipality
“Municipality of Eldoret has a population of nearly 200.000 people. Eldoret is the fastest growing city in Kenya at this moment and agriculture is the most important source of income. I work as a Community Development Officer and my job entails the organisation of community empowerment training courses and linking community organisations with both national and international issues.”

Experiences in The Netherlands
“During the training course “Climate Change and Sustainable Local Development” and my internship I gained experience in municipal co-operation with stakeholders on sustainability efforts, learned about complexity of climate change and composition of water boards in The Netherlands. I was amazed how good the relationship between the NGOs and municipality of Delft is. Finally, the practice and theory were very relevant to the situation in Kenya, as climate change has a big impact on daily life of our people.”

Back Home Action Plan
“After my return to Eldoret, I will try to standardize the Council procedures using the knowledge that I gained in The Netherlands. Eldoret Municipality Council has asked me to make an implementation action plan. I would share my gained knowledge with other local authority staff and hopefully it will be replicated to other municipalities in Kenya.”

“My next step would be to establish a commission in order to share all the information with my colleagues from the other municipalities and local communities. We will use the network we already have with local communities in cascading gained knowledge to all levels of our society.”
