Reliable local services, inclusive local policies and effective partnerships within local communities are crucial to achieve stability, promote sustainable development and increase the quality of life of citizens worldwide.

It is important, therefore, that leaders at the local level demonstrate responsibility, responsiveness and a clear vision for the future. Moreover, they need skilled people to manage and deliver services in a transparent and effective way. At the same time, citizens should have the knowledge and skills to put forward their needs and ideas and to hold their governments accountable.

The Hague Academy for Local Governance aims to develop the knowledge and skills of both government practitioners, members of civil society and professionals at donor and development organisations. With our programmes, we respond to the fast growing need for training and skills development in the practice of local governance. We are convinced that this will help governments and their citizens to become more self-reliant and take responsibility for their own development.
