Sustainable Development through Improved Local Governance in Iraq

The “Sustainable Development through Improved Local Governance in Iraq ” took place in Iraq in 2023 as part of the five-year ‘Sustainable Development through Improved Local Governance’ (SDLG) programme. Technical staff and leaders of the six different districts and the Ministry of Municipalities followed a tailor-made training, with the intervention having as a focal point the region of Kurdistan, Iraq, aimed to further strengthen resilience in areas with a large influx of displaced people.

In March and October 2023, two sets of trainings were organised as part of the SDGL programme. Each set of trainings focused on two groups with two different topics:

  • Group 1: Inclusion and Participation
  • Group 2: Leadership and Vision

The beneficiaries of the training were technical staff and leaders of the six different districts and the Ministry of Municipalities. One part of the training is aimed at technical staff on community involvement and inclusive and responsive decision making with the goal to improve decision making processes, including identification of citizen needs and representation.

The other part of the training aims to improve understanding of local leaders about their roles and mandate in relation to issues of migration and displacement and improve their capacities to carry out these roles efficiently and effectively.
