The Hague Academy’s Vision on the SDGs

Government leaders will gather in New York in September to evaluate progress on the SGDs and discuss future actions to step up ambitions. The Hague Academy advocates for a multi-level approach, translating the Global Goals in coherent national and local development plans.

On the 24th and 25th of September, heads of states will discuss the SDGs for the first time since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015. They will assess progress achieved so far and, where progress is insufficient to meet the Goals on time, discuss what can be done to catalyse it. At The Hague Academy, we believe that a multilevel approach is needed to accelerate results. The potential of local authorities to contribute to issues of poverty, job creation, climate adaptation and gender equality, is huge, but in many countries subnational governments lack the support and resources needed to address them. Therefore, strengthening local, democratic institutions through decentralisation and local capacity building is an effective strategy for government leaders who wish to deliver on the SDGs.

The Hague Academy for Local Governance contributes to capacity building on decentralisation for development by organising the training “Localising the SDGs”, which takes place in The Hague from 1 to 5 July. In this course, international experts will discuss the responsibilities, resources and capacities needed at national and local level to become more effective in delivering on the SDGs. Intervention strategies for donors and lessons learned will be shared and examples will be presented of the SDGs as a framework for local policies.
